Data Collection & Reporting

Turning Young People´s Voices Into Lasting Community Changes

Our Data Collection Process

Collect

We work with local partners to prepare the surveys and translations, and support schools in gathering accurate, anonymous responses from young people.

Analyze

After the surveys close, we process the data and highlight the key risk and protective factors affecting young people in the community.

Report

We transform the findings into clear visuals and community-ready reports that can be put to use immediately.

The Survey

The Planet Youth survey collects anonymous responses from young people in participating communities. It examines risk and protective factors in four domains: family, school, peer group, and leisure time. It also covers perceptions of substance use and overall youth wellbeing.

These findings help communities design and refine local plans and strategies. By repeating the survey every two years, communities can track change over time, measure impact, and adjust their work as needs evolve.

What to expect

The Planet Youth survey is designed to be straightforward and student-friendly. Participation is anonymous and confidential, allowing young people to answer openly without fear of being identified.

To ensure reliable community-level results, we recommend reaching at least 80% response rate in each school. Most students complete the survey in 20-30 minutes.
The survey covers a wide range of topics, including substance use and perceptions, wellbeing, family, peer group, leisure time, school, community, and digital prevalence.

The partner will receive their reports 8 weeks after data collection closes.

Example of results

Planet Youth partners receive clear reports for the school level and the community level. The reports provide timely feedback and offer a current snapshot of what young people are experiencing.

These findings help teams monitor key risk and protective factors over time, understand how they relate to substance use and well-being, and make strategic decisions tailored to each community.

During the past 10 years more then 100 peer reviewed articles have
been published about the Icelandic Prevention
Model’s approach.

Our method

We developed an evidence-based approach to adolescent substance use prevention that involved a broad range of relevant stake holders who worked together on this community-based approach.
