Official Launch of Planet Youth in the Western Cape, South Africa

Recently, the official launch of Planet Youth in the Western Cape took place in Mitchells Plain. The event brought together more than 600 people, including parents, learners, community champions, NGO partners, and leaders from across government. Among those present were the Premier of the Western Cape and the Ministers of Health, Education, and Mobility, reflecting the strong leadership behind this initiative.

Planet Youth was represented by our Chief Knowledge Officer, Margrét Lilja Guðmundsdóttir, who addressed the gathering and shared our commitment to working alongside communities to create healthier environments for young people.

In preparation for this launch, 49,094 Grade 8 and 9 learners from across the province had already taken part in the Planet Youth Survey, achieving an impressive 89% participation rate. This valuable data provides a clear picture of young people’s lives and experiences, serving as the foundation for action in the months and years ahead.

This marks a significant step in upstream prevention — using evidence to guide decisions, empowering communities, and building supportive environments where young people can thrive.

It has been an honour to work with the inspiring team in the Western Cape, and we look forward to continuing this important work alongside our partners to ensure that prevention is possible, effective, and sustainable.
