The Government of Uganda has taken a significant step towards transforming youth well-being by committing to the implementation of the Icelandic Prevention Model. In partnership with Planet Youth, this groundbreaking initiative aims to reach 10 million people across 18 districts.
This ambitious pilot project, which is currently in the funding phase, marks a milestone in global efforts to prioritize primary prevention. With a signed contract in place, the project is set to begin early in the new year, focusing initially on building the infrastructure required to support communities and villages participating in this transformative effort.
The foundation for success has already been laid through a series of workshops with key stakeholders. These sessions have fostered collaboration and provided valuable insights to guide the project’s development. From policymakers to community leaders, stakeholders have demonstrated a shared commitment to ensuring that this initiative meets its full potential.
By implementing the Icelandic Prevention Model, Uganda is embracing a proven strategy that has demonstrated success in reducing youth substance use and enhancing community well-being worldwide. This partnership with Planet Youth reflects the power of collective action and the importance of equipping communities with tools and knowledge to build a healthier future for young people.
As this work unfolds, we remain inspired by Uganda’s dedication to creating opportunities for its youth and setting an example for others. Prevention is not just an aspiration—it is achievable, and this initiative is a testament to what is possible when communities come together with a shared vision for positive change.
We look forward to sharing updates as this important work progresses and celebrating the milestones that lie ahead.
